    What is a Counseling Intern?

Counseling interns are master’s level counseling students who are completing their clinical experience as a requirement before they can be approved for graduation to receive their counseling degree. These individuals are well-established graduate students with a wealth of knowledge, developing skills, and a strong drive to provide ethical and effective treatment.

Why Should I Trust A Counselor in Training?

Interns provide services under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor who will monitor their work to ensure that the client receives the best treatment. There’s no need to feel apprehensive when considering working with a counseling intern as they are held to the same standard as the licensed counselor who supervises them. These individuals can only discuss their clients with their supervisor, and only for the purpose of receiving guidance and to strengthen their skills. This clinical process is important for interns as they must receive real-world experience before they can test for their license.

Some clients may find working with an intern as the best financial choice for them. Interns are capable of providing the same quality of care, with guidance, as their licensed supervisor but at a reduced rate. Clients who are uninsured or underinsured may find this to be a practical pathway to quality mental health care. Also, as more people are learning that mental health must be prioritized, it is becoming more challenging to find counselors with open availability. Counseling interns make it possible for more people to be helped without first being placed on a waitlist.

What is the Session Rate for Counseling Interns?

Master’s level interns are able to provide services at a significantly lower rate of $65 per session for clients who will not utilize insurance benefits. For clients who will utilize insurance benefits, all copays and coinsurances will apply as contracted with the insurance provider.
